The O’Reilly Hall, UCD was the venue for the 2010 annual conference of the Sales Institute of Ireland on May 20th. The conference theme, ‘Restoring Trust & Confidence’, provided the backdrop for a selection of engaging speakers to provide delegates with unique insights and a much greater understanding of how to build trust and confidence in the products and services they sell and the industries they represent.

In the first presentation of the morning, Mark Cahalane, Managing Director of Edelman Ireland, explained how Ireland has experienced a profound decline in trust and why this matters to sales professionals. He presented key findings from the 2010 Edelman Trust Barometer which surveyed 4,875 people in 22 countries across 5 continents. Leading Economist, Marc Coleman then explained why Ireland’s economy is at a tipping point and what needs to happen to restore vital business confidence and rebuild trust in key sectors. IDA Ireland Chief Executive, Barry O’Leary maintained the positive tone of the conference with his presentation which focused on the importance of reputation, a vital component when trying to compete for high value FDI projects which are so important to the Irish economy.

After the mid morning coffee break, eBay Director of Strategy, John McElligott, gave delegates a better understanding of how trust matters in the online environment while also pointing out that ‘despite their obvious downsides, recessions are times of great competitive opportunities’. Head of Sales for Pepsico International in Ireland, Jonathan Staunton, explained the approach PepsiCo has taken to developing market share and increasing sales in the current environment. The last speaker of the morning was Jonnie Cahill, Head of Communications and Sponsorships, at Telefonica O2 Ireland who focused on the important role of brands in restoring trust & confidence. In his conclusion, he reminded delegates that profit and trust are not mutually exclusive and that a lack of trust kills all relationships.

The first speaker of the afternoon, Aongus Hegarty, VP & GM, Small & Medium Business EMEA, DELL,spoke about the importance of knowing your customer and earning their trust. Eunan O’Carroll, Director of Sales & Marketing at Friends First, then focused on the need for rebuilding trust in financial services - a sector where rebuilding trust remains a significant challenge. The final speaker of the day was Wilhelm Verwoerd of the Irish Peace Centres, who was joined by two former political prisoners and enemies from opposite sides of the conflict in Northern Ireland. In a powerful presentation, they told their incredible story about how they have earned each other's trust and become good friends proving that trust can be achieved even in circumstances where it was thought impossible.
