Background to Speakers:
Bryan was born in Zambia to Irish parents. His first taste of real success was winning the Junior Rowing Championship of Ireland as an 18 year old. He was then selected to row for Ireland in 1980. Having joined the British Army, he gained a place at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst before winning the opportunity to serve with the elite 2nd Gurkha Rifles.
Bryan served with Gurkhas all over the world for six years and this included operational experience. He left the Gurkhas in 1990 and spent a year in Nepal leading climbing, trekking and white water rafting expeditions.
He then took a team of Gurkhas to Africa to work on a diamond mine in Angola. When the mine was overrun by UNITA terrorists, Bryan and his team were taken into captivity. Released after three days and flown to safety in Namibia, Bryan returned to war torn Angola within two days and took his Team back with him.
Following on from his experiences in Africa, Bryan embarked on a career in sales, initially as a sales man and then as a sales coach. During this time, Bryan developed his ability to measurably develop both attitude and skills.
He established Tailor Made Training Ireland in 2001. His Clients now include The Royal Bank of Scotland Group (we have just been awarded Approved Supplier status), Standard Life Assurance Company, the Lloyds Banking Group, Sporting Teams, Public Sector Businesses and SMEs.
Bryan is a member of the Institute of Directors and a business mentor for the Princes Trust in Northern Ireland.
Ian combines his two long-term passions through the medium of his careers. Since his return to Ireland following emigration during the last (1980s) recession, he has stewarded the niche consultancy firm ianmcclean & partners – specialising in Leadership Development; whilst at the same time he pens a weekly feature for the Sunday Independent - on horse racing.
The Ian Mcclean & Partners business has, in the last decade worked with over 7,000 business leaders from 173 blue-chip companies in 37 industry sectors. Current clients include: Heineken, BoI, Accenture, VHI, Citi, 3Ireland, Sandisk, Pfizer, Chartered Accountants Ireland, International Rugby Board and Publicis QMP. His parallel involvement over the previous two decades with leaders in the racing industry make for some thought provoking cross analogies.
Ian is also co-founder of FLOW International – a multi-national facilitator network delivering specific global Organisational Development initiatives with clients including General Motors and Oracle.
